Lights switched on so pedestrians can cross the road safely at last

TRAFFIC lights have finally been switched on at a new pedestrian crossing… six months after it was built.

The facility, on Herries Road, Southey, had stood unused with orange bags over the lights since the summer.

They were not connected to the electricity supply because work was scheduled on a day when workmen took industrial action, Sheffield Council said.

Officers said the project dropped down the queue behind other schemes.

The delay infuriated residents and Southey Labour councillor Gill Furniss raised the matter on their behalf.

She said: "Herries Road can be a dangerous crossing for pedestrians as cars travelling more than 40mph often come downhill from behind a blind bend. People have been running to reach the central island in order to cross safely which is not only risky but ridiculous. Six months is an outrageous amount of time spent waiting to simply switch some lights on."

Connection work was completed last week and the lights are now in operation.
