LIFE sailing the seven seas is a step closer for north Derbyshire Royal Navy recruit Ben Spooner after he completed his initial training at HMS Raleigh in Cornwall.
The 20-year-old, pictured above, from Killamarsh, used to work in a fast-food restaurant but is now pursuing a career as a Royal Navy engineering technician.
He joined up in December and was put through an intense 10-week course designed to prepare recruits for a service career, which ended with a passing-out-parade in front of their families and friends.
The former Eckington School pupil said: “I’ve been interested in joining the Royal Navy from a young age and want to see the world.
“The training has been hard work, but enjoyable, particularly staying the night on a decommissioned minesweeper, driving the small boats and the military exercises.”
