Life expectancy must improve

HEALTH service providers are being urged to improve the poor life expectancy figures in parts of South Yorkshire.

The Director of Public Health for Barnsley has made the appeal in her latest annual report for the town, which gives recommendations for tackling cardiovascular disease, cancer and respiratory disease - the three biggest killers in Barnsley, which accounted for three quarters of all premature deaths between 2007 and 2009.

Elizabeth Shassere said: “The recommendations we have made for services could not only help save lives but also reduce years spent living in poor health or with disability.

“We cannot continue to let the people of Barnsley experience years of life lost.”
