Your recent headline Axed council debates spark ‘silencing’ row, about the move to reduce the number of town hall scrutiny committee meetings, signals a deeply depressing start to the new Lib Dem leadership.

For the past year, I was chair of a scrutiny committee and vice-chair of the Scrutiny Management Committee, an all-party group.

Not once did the Lib Dems ever put forward any change to their own budget proposals to cut the number of scrutiny committee meetings, nor did they raise concerns about it.

Indeed, many councillors on all sides support the idea of allowing more meetings to be held in the community to question service providers and hear from the public.

This was a move with all-party agreement.

The Liberal Democrats should be honest with people and admit this.
