SHEFFIELD Cathedral chiefs have issued a final appeal for anti-capitalist protestors to leave the cathedral forecourt within a week.
Legal action could be taken to end the Occupy Sheffield protest, which has defied requests to leave since setting up on November 5, if the camp does not comply said a cathedral statement.
It added: “Although it hopes for a sympathetic response from protestors and a peaceful end to the protest, the Cathedral Chapter is prepared to move to legal action to end the illegal trespass if the site is not vacated and cleared within a week.”
The protest has caused ‘disruption’ and is a ‘drain on resources’ added Dean of Sheffield the Very Revd Peter Bradley.
Occupy members have previously said they will move ‘only when we get change’ and last week took possession of the old Salvation Army Citadel on Cross Burgess Street.
Rev Bradley said the protest had highlighted issues of concern but also interrupted services, caused declining visits and took up staff time.
