A number of Leeds United players dedicated Saturday’s fine 2-0 victory over Championship table-toppers Derby County to the memory of Blake Cairns – younger brother of reserve goalkeeper Alex.
A minute’s applause was held before kick-off in memory of the teeanger, younger brother of Alex, who tragically died in a car accident near Doncaster earlier this month.
Doncaster-born Alex Mowatt, who set up United’s first goal just before the break, scored by Mirco Antenucci, dedicated the win to Cairns.
Two-goal Antenucci also said that the Cairns family were in his thoughts, sentiments echoed by captain-for-the-day Stephen Warnock, who also hailed Leeds fans in remembering the late Gary Speed, with the third anniversary of his death arriving on Thursday.
On the win, Mowatt tweeted: “No better feeling than winning, the boys were class today, that one was for Blake Cairns RIP buddy.”
Also taking to Twitter, Antenucci said: “Great great win today!! my dedication and my thoughts go to the family of @AlexCairns30.”
Offering his thoughts, Warnock tweeted: “Great show of respect for Blake Cairns and his family and a result for them! Emotional few weeks for everyone involved at Leeds! 3 points!!
“Forgot to mention the applause for Gary Speed as well. Great respect for a great at the club.”
Marco Silvestri, Gaetano Berardi and Guiseppe Bellusci were among other Whites players who took to social media to hail the result.
Silvestri posted a picture of himself and Warnock showing each other their mutual appreciation during the game, along with the simple message ‘That’s Leeds!!”.
Bellusci, who returned to the heart of defence in place of Jason Pearce, also revealed his delight at Saturday’s eye-catching victory.
He tweeted: “We realise that we are strong? We have to believe! Go Leeds leeds leeeds congratulations to all!!! Thanks @anteseven.”
