Sheffield’s new top judge was due to be sworn in at the Royal Courts of Justice in London today.
Julian Goose QC, head of Zenith Chambers in Leeds, has been appointed as a senior circuit judge.
He replaces the former Honorary Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Alan Goldsack QC, who retired in May.
Mr Goose has acted in several high-profile criminal court cases and prosecuted Dewsbury pair Karen Matthews and Michael Donovan for the kidnap of Karen’s daughter Shannon Matthews in 2009. He also prosecuted paedophile Ronald Castree, who sexually assaulted and killed an 11-year-old girl then let an innocent man serve 16 years in jail for her murder
Mr Goose is also an expert in complex fraud, financial crime, institutional sexual abuse and high value drugs trials, as well as health and safety cases.
He studied law at Leeds University and was called to the bar in 1984.
He become a QC in 2002.
