Court cases were set to be delayed or adjourned at courts across South Yorkshire today as criminal barristers and solicitors walked out for a day in protest at Government cuts.

Lawyers across the country are angry at proposed government reforms to the criminal justice system, which include plans to cut fees and legal aid and reduce the number of firms who can offer free 24-hour legal advice.

The Criminal Bar Association and the Criminal Law Solicitors’ Association have joined forces to protest.

A CLA spokesman said: “What the Lord Chancellor has proposed is an attack on the criminal justice system.”
