NEW legislation for a high-speed rail line which will cut journey times from Sheffield to London will allow the Government to press ahead.
Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin has announced a new Paving Bill to let the second phase of the flagship HS2 project – from Birmingham to Leeds – be fast-tracked.
Mr McLoughlin’s announcement aims to allay fears from supporters in the North who expressed concern there would not be a legislative commitment to phase two before the next election.
The bill, allowing the Government the financial powers to proceed quicker than normal on construction design, is being put forward in the next session of Parliament.
