Firefighters found the body of a woman, named locally as Freda, in a 17th century Grade II listed farmhouse this morning.

When they arrived at the property in Spout Lane, Stannington, they found it engulfed in flames and discovered the body during a search.

Freda, aged in her 90s, lived in the house with her elderly husband, Len.

Fire and police chiefs issued a joint statement earlier today, in which they said one person is 'unaccounted for'.

Neighbour Ann Currier said she was woken by the sound of fire engines arriving at the house.

She said: "I'm really sad about what has happened."

She described Freda and Len as 'friendly, sociable and kind'

"They both did a lot in the community," she said.

"Len used to drop plants round our house when we first moved in and would drop books round for the children when they were young.

"They used to do a lot for the school as well, just a really nice couple.

"I would often see them and talk to them. Len was very knowledgeable and would always say hello.

"I've not seen either of them for months, though."

Another neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "I've not seen them for about six months. They were both in their 90s and were struggling to get about I think."
