DONCASTER Council is pioneering the use of the latest technology for street lighting.

LED street lights use less energy and need less maintenance and the Highway Operations team has recently completed a two-year trial of different types in the Carcroft and Skellow areas to find the most effective.

The trial revealed that LED lights use approximately 45 per cent less energy than current street lights.

Mayor Peter Davies said changing all of Doncaster’s street lights at once would cost tens of millions, which is not feasible in the current economic climate, but the council plans to start replacing faulty ones with LEDs in the near future.
