One of Sheffield’s most senior ranking police officers is to visit the crime scene where a female police officer was seriously injured by a man armed with an axe.

Chief Superintendent David Hartley, Sheffield’s District Commander, will address the media gathered outside the flat in Plowright Close, Gleadless Valley, where the woman and a male colleague were attacked after calling at the property to deal with a domestic incident.

After attacking the two bobbies, the man with the axe then fled to the nearby Co-op store in Blackstock Road, where he began hurling missiles at staff and customers.

Three other police officers who arrived at the shop to arrest him were also injured.

A man is being held this afternoon on suspicion of attempted murder.

The press conference is due to take place at 1pm.
