La Traviata at Rotherham's All Saints Square - SLIDESHOW

THINK of live opera and the last venue which probably springs to mind is Rotherham town centre.

But last night that particular corner of South Yorkshire was the place to be for all opera fans...

Well at least those who couldn't get a ticket to see La Traviata performed at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

For it was there that opera officienados joined with complete first timers to watch Giuseppe Verdi's classic love story on a big screen specially mounted in All Saint's Square.

They gathered, many with picnic baskets, to hear the great American soprano Rennee Fleming take on the role of courtesan Violette, with Joseph Calleeja as her young lover Alfredo and Thomas as unyielding father – all beamed back live from London.

The free event was part of BP's Big Screens Programme which will feature 42 free screenings around the country this summer.

And, if you missed out, there's another chance to catch a bit of culture on Wednesday, July 15, at 7pm when The Barber of Seville will be beamed back live to Rotherham.

n Rotherham council tax payers could end up footing the bill for development work on an office block which will never be built due to the credit crunch.

More than 900,000 has been spent so far on plans to build a four storey block replacing the old All Saints' Building.

But demolition costs and planning work were paid for by grants from Yorkshire Forward, which may now seek to claw back the funding from the council.

The 10 million block in All Saints' Square was to be part of the town's 2 billion Renaissance scheme, but developers Illiad have pulled the plug due to the uncertain economic climate.
