A violent thug has been sentenced to 13-and-a-half years in prison after he viciously attacked a man outside a Sheffield club.

The 40-year-old victim was left with broken bones and stab wounds after he was assaulted outside Sheffield Trades and Labour Club on Duke Street by Mark Anthony Cooper.

Sheffield Crown Court heard Cooper, aged 38, of West Park Drive, Swallownest, went out armed with a knife on the evening of March 22.

He set upon his victim leaving him with stab wounds to his ear, leg and back.

The man also suffered broken ribs and a broken shoulder blade in the assault.

Cooper pleaded guilty at Sheffield Crown Court to wounding with intent and possessing a knife on the first day of his trial.

Judge Andrew Camp jailed Cooper 13 and a half years for the wounding, plus one year, to run concurrently, for possessing the blade.

Detective constable Tom Ryan, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “I am pleased that the sentence reflects the extremely violent nature of this incident.

“Mark Cooper admitted that he made his way to the club, arming himself with a knife, with the intention of acting violently.”

DC Ryan added: “I hope this sentence serves as a strong warning to anyone who considers carrying a knife.”
