Penistone Gala organisers are hosting two art competitions for local kids, ahead of this summer’s event.
Organisers have announced that this year’s Penistone Gala and Mayor’s Parade - held on June 9-11 - will be a Star Wars-themed celebration.
They are now asking local schoolchildren to take part in two competitions, to tie in with this theme: the first is to design artwork for the gala brochure, the second is to create a Star wars-inspired model, which will be put on display in the marquee at the gala.
Penistone Gala committee member Jon Gilbert said: “If you love Star Wars, you are going to love the theme of this year’s parade. It’s 40 years since the release of the original Star Wars film, and we plan on celebrating in style!
“We are expecting floats filled with Jedis, Stormtroopers - and maybe even the occasional Ewok - as Penistone tries to bring balance to the Force. If you’re coming to watch the parade, we’d love you to wear fancy dress, too.
“We’re asking local schoolchildren to get involved in our two arts competitions, that are running ahead of the Penistone Gala Weekend. Firstly, we’re asking children to draw or design a Star Wars-themed picture for the gala brochure. Our favourites will be publiushed in the Penistone Gala magazine.
“We would also love children to design and build a Star Wars-inspired model. These will be put on display in the marquee at the gala on Sunday June 11. Models should be no larger than 50cm³.”
If you would like to enter, email entries to firstname.lastname@example.org before 12pm on Friday February 24. All entrants must include their name, school and age. Those entering models must then deliver their models to the gala marquee, on Penistone Showground, on Sunday June 11, between 9am and 1:30pm. Judging will take place at 3pm.
Penistone Gala Weekend is an annual event run by local volunteers, from Penistone Round Table, Penistone Scouts and Penistone Ladies Circle, together with Penistone Town Council. The weekend comprises several separate events, including a Friday night comedy tent, a Saturday fun run, family musical festival, and rock concert, all culminating in Sunday’s parade.
