Kids partake in Wii-search
A PRIMARY school in Sheffield has been chosen to be at the heart of a project to convert classic playground games into computer games.
Monteney Primary in Parson Cross will be at the centre of two years of research by Sheffield University experts into playground games and culture.
The initiative aims to create prototype games similar to interactive Nintendo Wii sports games, where handsets take the place of actual tennis rackets or other sports equipment.
It is hoped the study will reveal how playground games, songs and rhymes are a living tradition continually influenced by popular media such as comics, TV, film and computer games.
Monteney headteacher Nicola Shipman said she was delighted her school was involved in such an innovative and exciting project.
"The opportunity to capture some of these games and rhymes and use them to develop an idea for a new Nintendo Wii game will offer an exciting opportunity for the children here," she said.
Research leader Prof Jackie Marsh from Sheffield University's school of education said the findings at Monteney would be added to work at another school in London.
"Children are remarkably innovative in their play and in this project we want to capture their inventiveness in the school playground," she said.
The project will culminate in a series of high-profile events, which will include a children's conference to be held in Sheffield and a book.
