Kelly gets in gear to take on the big boys at motocross
REVVED up and raring to go!
Teenager Kelly Ward is gearing up to take on the boys in a motocross event at Sheffield's Hallam FM Arena.
The 18-year-old will pull on her leathers and take part in her first Indoor Supercross Championship next Saturday.
Bike-crazy Kelly, of Armitage Road, Deepcar, started racing at the age of seven and won her first race at just nine.
She has won the British Girls Championships an amazing seven times.
Aunt Tracey Martin said: "This is not just a hobby for Kelly, it's her whole life. Taking part in this race next month is a dream come true.
"She's not just good on the track, she's brilliant. With a bit of financial support she could go on to be real star."
Kelly currently holds the title of British Ladies Champion and is looking for sponsorship to turn her ambition of racing professionally into reality.
She has been awarded a free place at the Supercross Championship courtesy of the event's organisers Future West, and is being marketed as the Yorkshire lass taking on the big boys.
"I'm a bit nervous because I'll be riding in front of lots of people," said Kelly. "But I don't worry about the danger aspect of it at all – I just take it all in my stride."
"I think I'm going to be the only girl taking part, but I'm used to that now."
Kelly will also be giving an exhibition of her skills on her Suzuki RN 125 before the event, alongside top British professional riders Neil Prince and Paul Cooper.
Tracey, of Wentworth Road, Penistone, added: "Kelly is really talented, but at the moment she needs a little bit of backing.
"She's just finished college, and her parents Mandy and Doug Ward put a lot of money into her motocross, but what she really needs to turn professional is a sponsor.
"Her parents have been wonderful – it's an expensive hobby, and they've funded it for the last 11 years, but they're not a rich family. Kelly needs a bit of help to prove that motocross is not just for the guys."
Tickets for the Sheffield Supercross Championship are available from the Arena Box Office, priced 19.95 for adults and 16.50 for children. Call the booking office on 0114 2565656.
