Keith finally makes it swing at the City Hall
CATCHLINE: KEITHEB Sheffield institution Keith Peters Big Band finally plays the city hall.
AFTER more than 30 years Sheffield music institution Keith Peters will finally realise a lifelong ambition.
The 82-year-old, who leads the Keith Peters Big Band and was a member of the original Judas Priest, is taking to the stage of Sheffield City Hall for the first time - and it’s all in the name of charity.
The swing concert on Tuesday, February 28, will boost Sheffield Lord Mayor Coun Sylvia Dunkley’s two civic charities - the Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind and the British Heart Foundation.
Although Keith has played professionally on many stages in skiffle, rock and soul bands, sharing the spotlight with stars including Dudley Moore, this night will be extra special.
Keith, of Machon Bank, Nether Edge, said: “It’s always been an ambition of mine to play at the City Hall. I used to go and listen to all these big bands there but never thought I would actually get to play the stage.”
Keith writes, arranges tunes and leads the swing band - which has 21 members, some of who have been there since it was founded.
They have wowed crowds all over the city, last year opening the Music in the Gardens festival in Sheffield’s Botanical Gardens, and have a current residency at Abbeydale Picture House.
Trumpet player Nick Chandley, who has been with the band for 33 years, said: “This is a Sheffield band playing a Sheffield venue for the city’s mayor and Sheffield charities.
“It was very fitting to have it at the City Hall. The band aren’t getting paid, so most of the money will go to charity and it is a celebration of Sheffield too.”
The concert is billed as a ‘night not to be missed’ with music from some of the legendary bands of swing and songs ranging from those by Ella Fitzgerald to Oasis.
Coun Dunkley said: “I hope this will one of the biggest fundraisers of my mayoral year for the two charities.
“The City Hall holds about 2,000 people and if we could get that many people along it would be great.
“It’s going to be a fantastic evening.”

Sunday, February 19, 2012 at 11:36 AMI've seen them a few times and have always enjoyed the concerts. They have a fantastic female vocalist, but the two elderly male vocalists who were obviously good in their prime are unfortunately both well past it.
