Just like old times as Chatsworth's sundial sculpture arrives

A NEW sundial sculpture showing the distance to 42 stone circles and earthworks in Derbyshire has been unveiled at Chatsworth in time for this year's summer solstice.

Timepiece was designed specifically for Chatsworth's world-famous, 105 acre garden by the artist Gary Breeze and is said to unite ancient and modern ways of telling the time.

Its location just below the cottage garden is in view of the 'modern' clock tower on the front of the Stables.

The angles of the faces are set to 53 degrees, the latitude at Chatsworth, and they can also tell the time according to their longitude.

The Duke of Devonshire and Gary Breeze supervised the installation, which involved a fork-lift truck to place the sculpture on a plinth.

The sculpture is made from Woodkirk Yorkstone quarried near Morley in Yorkshire.

Gary Breeze spent six weeks on the project following detailed consultations with the Duke about the nature of the work and its location at Chatsworth.

Gary's work includes the lettering for the Meridian Line in the Millennium Gardens at Greenwich and the London memorial to the victims of the Bali bombing.

He said: "The idea behind Timepiece lay in the desire to draw people to a particular spot on a small lawn in the garden. Only from this focal point could one see a lovely view of the stable clock tower through a small gap in the trees, and so a sculpture which brought people to that spot was called for.

"There are more than 42 ancient stone circles and earthworks in Derbyshire, some magnificent like Arbor Low, others almost lost in the grass like the small stone setting on Beeley Moor. The names of these places bear witness to a rich dialect; the edges and tors, flats, brooks and becks."
