A CASINO doorman has been cleared of raping a 21-year-old woman after a night out in Sheffield.
Stephen Clegg, aged 53, denied raping the woman at her home after the bash on January 13.
Mr Clegg, of Slate Street, Heeley, told Sheffield Crown Court he had had consensual sex with the woman.
He said there was no conversation between them but at no point had her actions suggested she wasn’t consenting.
The woman had claimed she fell asleep on the sofa with her housemate lying next to her and woke to find Clegg touching and then having sex with her.
Amanda Denton, defending, told the jury: “It was a rather grubby, unromantic encounter there was nothing said, but that does not make it non-consensual.
“This isn’t a man who had decided he was going to take advantage of the woman.”
Mr Clegg was on a night out with a group which included both women in Sheffield city centre.
He admitted agreeing to accompany the alleged victim home after she asked him to take a taxi with her because she was scared of getting one on her own.
Mr Clegg said they’d had their arms around each other in the taxi.
He said her housemate left the bar about an hour before they did, but when she got home was unable to get into the house because she’d lost her keys.
Mr Clegg said he helped the women into the house.
Asked what he’d wanted to happen, he said: “I didn’t plan on anything happening. It all just seemed to happen by itself.”
