A JEWELLER has been fined for selling unhallmarked gold after a joint operation involving Sheffield’s Assay Office.
Mukthtar Ahmed was ordered by magistrates to pay more than £1,700 in fines and costs after he admitted 11 offences under the Hallmarking Act.
The case was brought against him after the Sheffield Assay Office and West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service decided to assess the level of compliance with the Hallmarking Act 1973 by jewellers in Bradford.
Hallmarking sets consistent standards for the precious metals industry and is strictly controlled by the Sheffield Assay Office.
Ashley Carson, Sheffield Assay Master, said: “We hope this will be a lesson to traders to make sure they examine stock and ensure it complies with the Hallmarking Act.”
