Campaigners hoping to stop demolition of the former Jessop Hospital’s Edwardian Wing to make way for a new Sheffield University building have not given up hope – despite losing a bid for a judicial review.
The old hospital building is Grade II-listed and members of the campaign group have discovered a legal technicality which they hope could delay or prevent its loss.
Nick Roscoe and Valerie Bayliss, from the campaign to save the wing, have written to Sheffield University saying: “We understand, and English Heritage has confirmed to us, that Sheffield University has not yet fulfilled its legal obligation under the Listed Buildings Act, to give English Heritage an opportunity to make a record of the Grade II-listed Jessop Hospital.
“We understand this matter is now usually dealt with at application stage but English Heritage tell us this was not done in respect of Edwardian Jessops.
“However, we understand the legal requirement remains.”
