From wide-eyed schoolgirl to steely world champion, these are the pictures that chart Jessica Ennis’s growth into Sheffield’s - and Great Britain’s - golden girl.

They show a face that was first pictured in The Star 16 years ago - and is now so iconic that a huge image of it hangs at Barker’s Pool overlooking the City Hall.

It was 1996 when Jess first skipped over a hurdle at the Don Valley Stadium as a 10-year-old, surprising coaches at an athletics taster event with her natural flair.

She has come a long way since then - with millions of TV viewers cheering the 26-year-old former Sharrow Primary and King Ecgbert School pupil on to Olympic gold medal success on Saturday night.
