He already wears his glasses with pride – and now James Blakey from Eckington is in with a chance of national prize.
James is in the running for Specsavers’ title of Spectacle Wearer of the Year – and told The Star he is delighted to have been shortlisted as a finalist, from hundreds of entrants, for the national awards.
“I started wearing glasses last year because I need them for reading and working on the computer,” the 20-year-old said.
“But I have recently started wearing them more because they suit me and make a bit of a fashion statement!
“I entered the competition with my girlfriend, who also wears glasses, and I’m the lucky one who got through – I promise to share my Champagne with her, though!”
The awards were launched by Spice Girl Mel C, who James is hoping to meet at the awards ceremony on September 10, held at London’s Royal Opera House.
Prizes will be handed to winners in four age categories – 15 to 24, 25 to 39, 40 to 59 and 60-plus. One overall winner will take the grand prize – a two-week luxury holiday in St Lucia.
Mel C said: “Glasses wearing is fun now because there are so many styles – for going out, for chilling out, for wearing with jeans or for going somewhere special.”
