A new comedy drama based on the rise of home selling is being filmed in Sheffield.
Woodfield Road in Crookes has been chosen as one of the locations for ITV’s Brief Encounters, starring Penelope Wilton, Sophie Rundle, Angela Griffin and Sharon Rooney.
It focuses on four women striving to find happiness and fulfilment in the early 1980s. Steph (Rundle) finds new excitement in her life when she discovers Ann Summers party planning, bringing in her friends Pauline (Wilton), Nita (Griffin) and Dawn (Rooney).
The series is being made by CPL Productions.
ITV’s director of drama Steve November, who commissioned the programme with head of drama series Jane Hudson, said: “Brief Encounters is a refreshingly different domestic drama taking us back to the wonderful world of the 1980s.
“We’re really excited by this commission - it’s full of heart, story and great new characters and we’re very much looking forward to working with Danielle Lux, Arabella McGuigan and their production team at CPL.”
An ITV spokesman added: “Sheffield is a very recognisable area that has a lot of architecture that still resonates with the early 1980s which is where Brief Encounters is set.
“The northern warmth and the beauty of the city with the hills beyond were also factors in ITV’s decision to film in the area.”
Executive producer Arabella McGuigan added: “We’re delighted to have on board such a wonderful, inspiring cast to bring Brief Encounters boldly to life. Our four central female characters, their associated menfolk, mothers and friends are strong, relatable, surprising and funny and they’ll leap off the page in the hands of our stars. We can’t wait to see the first results.”
And CPL’s managing director Danielle Lux said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be producing our first drama for ITV. CPL takes great pride in producing television with heart and soul and Brief Encounters has that in spades.”
Filming is due to continue in Sheffield.
