It's time to see sense over flats
ENGLISH Heritage today trumpeted a 'call for action' to save conservation areas across the region which are under threat not only from neglect but also from unsympathetic changes carried out in the name of modernity.
They single out the much-loved icons of old: Sheffield Wicker Arches, Manor Lodge, Oakes Park and Shepherd Wheel, while urging councils and private organisations to save threatened architectural gems such as a cluster of little mesters' workshops, an 18th century residential area in the Cultural Industries Quarter and the last remnants of village life in Hackenthorpe.
The survey gives cause for concern and English Heritage would be assured of huge public support were it not for their questionable judgement and the apparent rule-bending approach to preserving Park Hill flats.
Critics of the lavish endorsement of public funds pumped into the project were condemned as expecting English Heritage to preserve the complex 'in aspic' and failing to see the underlying beauty and value of the project, which now turns out to be simply the concrete shell of the complex.
We welcome English Heritage's return to its fundamental protectionist principles and wish they would see sense over its ever changing support for Park Hill.
Stiff warning to all would-be dumpers
FLY tippers be warned! The courts have shown that you will be shown no sympathy when you are caught spoiling our countryside.
The message comes after litter lout Leigh Whitehouse was filmed by CCTV cameras as he dumped rubbish near the M1 after a member of the public warned the authorities that the spot was being favoured by flytippers.
Whitehouse was filmed, identified and hauled before the courts where he was stung with the stiffest fine yet dumped on a flytipper by a local court.
The public will welcome this stern message and hope anyone tempted to dump rubbish quickly learns that there is now the technology to bring them to justice - and the determination to make it worthwhile to do so.
