It's Barcelona or bust in old banger charity race

FOUR friends from Sheffield have set out on a trip to Barcelona - and the 840-mile journey will be a bit of a challenge.

Instead of making their way to the airport, couple Luke Stevenson and Harriet Hensby, both aged 20, and Nathan Rider and Sarah Case, both 24, all of whom live around Dore and Totley, plan to make the whole journey in a 14-year-old Honda Civic car which cost them just 200.

They are making the trek for a good cause - to participate in the Barcelona Bangers 2010 rally between Calais and the Spanish city to raise money for charity.

The car has been decorated as a spoof American Sheriff's car, complete with star motifs on the side and a blue light on top.

Luke, a salesman, who will be sharing the driving with fireman Nathan, said: "The banger rally is a three-day event, departing from Calais on Friday.

"It goes through cities including Lyon and Nice, and we are due to arrive in Barcelona on Sunday - as long as the car holds up. We saw it on sale on the street and bought it for 200. Staff at Peter Brooks Honda serviced the car for us."

The Chesterfield Road garage got the P-reg vehicle ready for the challenge free of charge and Andrew Page Motor Factors, of Oak Street, Heeley, donated parts.

Tyres have been supplied by Chesterfield firm AD, based on Carrwood Road in the town.

The group have also received sponsorship from the owner of Eton men's clothing store on Division Street in the city centre.

Luke said: "We are very grateful for the help we received preparing for the event and are appealing for sponsorship. If it wasn't for Peter Brooks Honda and the other firms this trip would not have been possible."

The foursome are raising money for the Make A Wish Foundation, a charity granting wishes of children and young people aged three to 17 living with life-threatening illnesses.
