It's a splash hit as residents tidy dyke
BEIGHTON residents rolled up their sleeves to tackle litter during a clean-up of Ochre Dyke.
People of all ages donned rubber gloves and carried black plastic sacks during the mammoth effort.
The clean-up was part of an anti-litter campaign in the village by Sheffield Council and the Sheffield Countryside Conservation Trust.
Coun Harry Harpham, Cabinet Member for Streetscene, said: "This is an excellent example of the local community working to make Sheffield cleaner, greener, and safer."
Last summer Beighton pupils designed anti-litter posters which were displayed on public buildings in the area, promoting the recycling centre off Beighton Road.
It takes between 10 and 20 years for plastic bottles to rot away when they are discarded, tin cans have a shelf-life of 50 years, and glass bottle can take about one million years to disintegrate!
