It's a knockout as schoolboys win boxing award
WATCHED by their proud parents, a group of boys from Handsworth Grange School donned shirts and ties as they were presented with medals after taking part in a boxing course.
Sessions at the school, which is a specialist sports college, were led by Sheffield professional boxer and soldier Ross Burkinshaw to get the 14 and 15 year-olds fit and teach them self-discipline.
Deepcar bantamweight Burkinshaw, a member of Third Battalion The Rifles, also gave them a talk about life in the Army.
The Year 10 pupils involved - Tom Stimpson, Ben Allen, Aqib Jaffer, Yousuf Jaffer, Curtis Hanney, Sam Rhodes Lockwood, Stefan Gill, Adam Litherland and Jamie Richards - passed a preliminary award from the Amateur Boxing Association.
The sessions were organised by Debbie Denial, intervention leader and key skills co-ordinator at Handsworth Grange, and colleague Dean Webster, as part of the school's drive to use sport in the curriculum.
Mrs Denial said: "The boys put in a lot of effort and it was good to see them succeed. We are now putting them forward for the next award. Their parents were really proud."
