Is that emergency fire siren or just phones?

FIREFIGHTERS at Sheffield's new multi-million pound fire station could not hear the emergency call-out siren when telephones were ringing, according to a new report listing problems with the building.

The fault, which fire bosses stress did not impact on any members of the public, is one of a number highlighted in a report detailing issues with the new 19 million building on Eyre Street in Sheffield city centre.

It has been prepared ahead of a fire authority meeting to be held later this month.

The report states that when firefighters moved from the old Wellington Street headquarters, they discovered that in certain areas the emergency siren could not be heard.

The report says: "A fault was identified with the fire station 'turn-out system' in that there are areas where the turn-out could not be heard if a telephone call was received by the station at the same time as the fire call was received.

"Immediate interim arrangements were put in place and the fault was repaired. There was no impact on service delivery."

The report states that Balfour Beatty Construction Ltd, which built the new station and fire service HQ, is "actively resolving snagging items".

Consultants hired by developer Hammersons have identified a list of 65 issues which still need to be resolved but the fire service has identified around 140 problems.

The report says: "Defects have been an ongoing issue, although many have been addressed.

"Of some 240 defects reported since occupation there are currently 45 registered with Balfour Beatty Construction Limited's aftercare service that have not been corrected.

"Several areas of major concern were escalated to seek urgent remedy, otherwise South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue was to seek legal resolution."

The new headquarters building was constructed so that the previous Wellington Street station could be demolished as part of plans to create a new city centre retail quarter.

Hammersons funded the project so the fire service was not out of pocket.
