IRENE Cottam is celebrating after her carnival-themed umbrella won first prize in an annual Parasol Walk.
Residents of ExtraCare’s Brunswick Gardens village at Woodhouse, Sheffield, took part in the walk around Rother Valley Country Park with their hand-made parasols.
Irene aged 64, scooped the top prize for her carnival brolly which she made from a feather boa, plastic fruit and a real pineapple.
She said: “It took me all morning but I was dead chuffed with the result.”
Irene also donned a matching carnival dress which she made herself.
African drummers accompanied 90 residents, staff and friends who walked the three miles around the park together before tucking into a hog roast.
“Everybody really enjoyed it and it was a lovely way to get the community together,” Irene said.
Last year, the walk had a World Cup theme and Irene made an umbrella with cut-out flags of the competing countries.
She said staff at the village put on lots of events to keep residents active.
“It’s lovely, everybody is friends and there’s always something to do here.”
