Forget Glastonbury, Reading and the Isle of Wight - Doncaster is set to kick off its very own music festival today.
Mapfest 2013 will get under way at a host of pubs and venues across the town centre - and the rock ‘n’ roll will continue into tomorrow with nearly 20 acts playing music to suit all tastes across the weekend.
Former Inspiral Carpets frontman Tom Hingley, who scored hits with songs such as This Is How It Feels, Dragging Me Down and Saturn 5, is among those lining up on the bill, alongside ex-Seahorses member Chris Helme who will also be entertaining the crowds.
The festival, which was first staged a few years ago, is a collaboration of Doncaster town centre’s live music venues in association with various individuals passionate about the live music scene in the town.
A spokesman said: “Mapfest was created to promote the diverse and vibrant music scene the town has to offer, across all styles and genres.
“Our initial ideas were to provide a predominantly free live music festival, with all parties giving their time, effort and commitment voluntarily.
“During our early meetings, the outcome was to create a festival guide based around a map of all participating venues, hence the name Mapfest.”
Each venue will be hosting a stage dedicated to a specific genre, demonstrating the variety and diversity throughout Doncaster.
The venues taking part are Baileys, which will host a rockabilly stage, Cask Corner, where blues fans will be in their element, and Crystals, which will be the venue for cabaret.
The Gatehouse will have an acoustic stage, The Cumberland will be staging a family fun day and tribute bands while Goose will stage Britpop. There’s alternative music at The Hall Cross, rock and punk at The Horse and Groom, bass at The Masons Arms, covers at The Old Angel, metal at The Priory and acoustic music at The Red Lion.
Social will have acoustic and indie, Vintage Rockbar will be the venue for metal and indie, as will the Woolpack, while the White Swan will provide classic rock, jazz and Irish music.
