An inquiry into the controversial appointment of Sheffield’s next Anglican bishop is to go ahead.

The Rt Rev Philip North was set to be elected this month, but declined the role amid unease over his opposition to the ordination of women as priests.

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York, Justin Welby and Dr John Sentamu, wrote to the Church of England’s independent reviewer, Sir Philip Mawer, requesting an investigation into the circumstances of Mr North’s nomination.

Sir Philip has now agreed to the inquiry, telling the archbishops: “I understand the significance of the issues raised and will seek to report on them in as timely a fashion as possible.”
