Inquest opened into death of Sheffield cricketer

An inquest has been opened and adjourned into the death of a young Sheffield cricketer.

Dominic Sayles, aged 21, from Norton, was struck by a train near the East Bank tunnel to the south of Sheffield train station on Friday, May 11.

He suffered serious injuries in the collision and was taken to the Northern General Hospital where a decision was made to switch off his life-support machine the following day.

His funeral will be at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium on Friday at 1pm.

Dominic, a former Meadowhead School pupil and Norton College student, was a bowler for Norton Oakes Cricket Club, and once played football for Holmesfield FC.

A coroner at the Medico Legal Centre in Sheffield opened and adjourned the inquest yesterday.

His death is not being treated as suspicious.
