KIND-hearted sports fans raised £1,500 for a fireman left with severe spinal injuries following a freak accident.

Hallam FC and Hallamshire Golf Club teamed up to organise a golf day at the Lodge Moor course, followed by dinner in the club house.

The event was held to raise funds for Gavin Walker, aged 27, of Thorpe Hesley, who was left paralysed after slipping on wet decking around a garden pool at his mother’s home in Brinsworth and landing on his head in the water.

He needs £13,500 to fund modifications to his home so he can live independently.

Organiser Andrew Sharman, of Hallam FC, said: “We had a total of 64 golfers taking part from 16 companies, which was a really good turnout. The team from Britannia Cars, in Dinnington, won. Gavin came along to the event and we presented him with a cheque for £1,500.”
