LIB Dems defending Sheffield Council are facing fresh challenges from independent candidates standing against two of the party’s councillors.
Richard Ward, former chairman of the Nether Edge Neighbourhood Group, has put himself up for election in the ward – where Labour is also hoping to make a significant challenge.
Mr Ward has lived in the area for 14 years and has been involved in campaigning against mobile phone masts, for introduction of air quality monitoring and for improved local bus services.
He said: “There are few amenities for young people. Traffic volumes and speeds are a real concern that stifle the growth of alternatives such as walking and cycling.”
Meanwhile Martin Brighton, of Lowedges, is standing in Beauchief and Greenhill ward, campaigning for council housing to be transferred back to the council from Sheffield Homes, giving elderly people more chance to have a say and providing more support for local shops.
