Ignoring public at political peril

TWO things come over loud and clear from the decision to overturn a council ruling that Myers Grove and Wisewood schools should be merged. The first is that politicians who make promises at election times are expected to keep them once the ballot box dust has settled. And that is what has happened here with the Lib Dems honouring the pledges which won them a seat. Secondly, we can see that public opinion is capable of overturning even the most entrenched of officer recommendations.

No decisions come without cost, of course. And now come warnings that we will have to pay for the u-turn which was embarrassingly forced on Labour at yesterday’s council meeting.

We are told that this comes with a 20 million price tag - the now-lost value of a school which would have replaced the two ageing ones. But things are never so clear cut and we are sure alternatives can be found.

This is not a day to look back, though, but one to look forward and hope all councillors have learned that the views of the public are ignored at their peril.

It’s just rubbish - but good for us all

THINGS are coming up green in Sheffield’s gardens after city folk were given a lesson in composting, which urges them to turn their waste into useful materials to help plants flourish.

The exercise was run by waste disposal contractors Veolia who told shoppers how easy it is to compost rubbish.

This is not only good for people’s gardens, it also helps with the current high-profile drive to reduce the amount of refuse sent to landfill sites or the city’s incinerator so we would urge anyone who has not yet taken up this challenge to find out more by visiting Veolia’s website.

Fidgets and fudges

GOOD news for fidgets...you’re making yourself thin without even realising it. It may annoy the person next to you, but all that twitching of legs and drumming of fingers could, it turns out, be burning off those calories. Sadly for the fatties, reaching for that extra choc bar doesn’t count as fidgeting!
