I welcome the news that council tax bills are set to be frozen in Sheffield for the fourth year running thanks to a £30m grant from central Government.
I don’t often do this, but I must commend the Labour administration in the Town Hall for accepting this grant.
However, I am truly fed up with the constant back patting and sycophantic self-applauding from Labour and the Lib Dems, who have both been claiming credit for this freeze.
Labour councillors have been explaining the decision in terms of their cost-of-living narrative while in Sheffield Hallam, almost every household has been plastered with yellow leaflets claiming it’s because the Lib Dems are in government that the freeze has come about.
The reality is that between 1994/5 and 2010/11, under successive Labour and Lib Dem administrations, average council tax rates in Sheffield increased by over 50 per cent. (Ssee the former Lib Dem Councillor J G Harston’s website mdfs.net/Docs/Sheffield/CouncilTax/City.htm).
With a track record like this, how can we ever trust either of them to keep rates down?
Only with a Conservative Government and local Conservative representatives in the Town Hall can you be sure you’ll keep your hard-earned money in your back pocket, where you know how to spend it best.
