A HUSBAND accused of strangling his estranged wife once said he would ‘do time for her’ when she threatened to leave him, a court heard.
Raymond Billam, aged 63, allegedly killed 46-year-old Joy Billam at his house in Guildford Road, Wheatley, Doncaster, when they rowed while discussing divorce proceedings.
Jurors at Sheffield Crown Court heard Joy’s body was found in the boot of her car less than 24 hours later.
Joy had got engaged to her boyfriend, Michael Woodland, the day before her death last September. Billam admits killing his wife but denies murder.
Joy’s best friend Carol Hattersley said Joy told her there were differences in the marriage and she once saw her with bruises on her arms after she tried to leave her husband around three years before her death. She said Joy told Billam their marriage was over in August.
Joy’s body was found in her car parked on Doncaster Road, Goldthorpe. A post-mortem examination showed she died from strangulation. The trial continues.
