Hundreds sign petition against fracking in Barnsley

More than 2,000 people have signed a petition opposing fracking in Barnsley.

Campaigners from No Fracking Barnsley started the petition to Barnsley Council leader Steve Houghton after exploratory licences for unconventional shale gas were granted in the town.

A campaign spokesperson said: “Many people didn’t know these licences cover most of Barnsley and surrounding areas, so we are doing all we can to raise awareness.

“The petition continues to grow as more people discover the negative impacts fracking could have on their lives, well-being and future.

“All over the country, people are coming together to protect their communities and reject fracking. Alongside other local groups, we will be holding events over the coming months to make sure people in the area are aware that fracking is a very real threat to Barnsley and the best time to stop it, is before it starts.”

The campaign group was formed in January.
