HUNDREDS of South Yorkshire homes were evacuated last night after gas cylinders started to explode when a shed went up in flames, writes Claire Lewis.
Around 500 people were ordered out of their Doncaster homes in and around Brunswick Square, Stainforth, when firefighers realised that there were cylinders inside the burning shed.
They put a 200 metre circular cordon in place around the blaze and asked everyone living inside it to leave.
Locals were offered emergency refuge in a nearby youth club and school.
They were allowed back home before daylight but firefighters remain at the scene with water jets on all the cylinders to cool them down in a bid to prevent any further explosions.
The fire started just before 9pm and residents were evacuated shortly afterwards.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.
