Howls of anger at foxy intruders

CHRISTMAS has come early for one group of rampant foxes.

For the constant howls throughout the night in one Sheffield suburb are driving residents to distraction as mating season is in full flow for the normally shy animals in the area.

Breeding season usually takes place in winter, but locals living in Parson Cross say they are in the thick of a summer fox orgy.

Plant pots have been wrecked, cars covered in paw prints and the relentless howling can be heard throughout the night.

Margaret Beasey, aged 65, of Pollard Road, says the noise and disturbance is leaving the community hugely frustrated.

"We have complained to the RSPCA, the City Council and Environmental Health but no-one's interested. At one point there were six foxes on top of a car and there's lots of baby ones who are getting into people's gardens.

"It's mating season and they are making terrible noises and keeping people awake at night as they seem to be coming out after 9pm. There are two cars on the street with paw prints all over them and they are starting to be a real nuisance."

The foxes are said to be running riot through gardens around the Pollard Crescent and Donovan Road area leaving plant pots smashed and flowers dug up.

"It's getting out of hand. It's driving the neighbours crazy."

A council spokesman said a service is not available to control foxes but advised residents to take steps to keep the animals at bay.

"Urban foxes are a citywide, if not nationwide, problem and certainly not restricted to Parson Cross. The council does not provide a vermin control service to deal with foxes but advice is available from Environmental Services on 0114 203 7415. "

The council offers tips to householders experiencing problems with foxes including ensuring rubbish is stored in containers with a lid on; not leaving food for pets out overnight; moving things around in the garden - as foxes don't seem to like changes to their environment; putting up mirrors in the garden ,which can deter them, and buying chemical and ultra-sonic devices which can also deter foxes.
