'How do Clegg voters feel now?'

LABOUR leadership candidate Andy Burnham launched a broadside attack on Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg during a visit to the city.

The Shadow Health Secretary, campaigning to be elected Labour leader in September, visited the newly opened Peter Moorhead Haemodialysis Unit at the Northern General Hospital.

He told The Star: "Coming to this city today I ask what do those people feel who put Mr Clegg into Parliament?

"What do they feel when they see him signing off the break-up of the NHS, scrapping plans to rebuild our schools and cutting the loan to Forgemasters - just weeks after he said on the campaign trail Sheffield would suffer from Tory cuts?

"There is no democratic mandate for what is happening here - and I feel the people here in Sheffield will feel this most."

Mr Burnham has fallen behind in the race for the leadership, trailing behind Doncaster North MP Ed Miliband and his brother David.

But he compared the race with the deputy leadership campaign of 2007, when eventual winner Harriet Harman was judged to be in third place until the final votes were counted.

His campaign has been boosted by a 10,000 donation from Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher although Mr Burnham isa lifelong Everton fan.

He admitted: "Yes, I'm coming from behind, but I'm in a strong third place. I have been humbled to have the support of the great man of Sheffield, David Blunkett."

Mr Burnham, who represents his home town of Leigh, pledged if elected he would end the practice of candidates being parachuted into Labour safe seats.

He added: "I would end the London-centric approach to politics, the attitude 'Westminster knows best'. The party has to learn from our mistakes - but also stick up for our achievements, such as this haemodialysis unit that we signed off when we were in power."

Labour members will receive ballot slips from September, with the victor announced on September 25.
