SHEFFIELD Council is proposing to make changes to its housing register because many of the 87,000 people on a waiting list for a home are not ‘actively seeking housing’.
The waiting list currently equates to 40 per cent of the city’s entire adult population - compared with five to 11 per cent in most other cities.
Only around 18,500 people who are on the list are bidding for homes, the council says.
Officials are concerned the size of the register ‘sends out an inaccurate message’ and is seeking to separate dormant names on the list.
The council also plans a requirement for people on the waiting list to re-register each year.
Those not ‘actively seeking accommodation’ would be put on an ‘inactive’ list.
