housing officials in Doncaster are urging private tenants in the borough to take action sooner rather than later if they think they will be affected by changes to housing benefit.
The rules that apply to most single people aged between 25 and 35 living in self-contained private accommodation changed significantly on January 1.
The change means only the lower rate of benefit for a room in shared accommodation can now be claimed.
Coun Ray Mullis, Doncaster Council cabinet member for housing, said: “We urge anyone who thinks they will be affected by the changes to contact the council straight away on 01302 862 021.
“There is a range of support and advice available to help cope with the changes.”
The new rules do not apply to tenants in council or registered housing association properties or certain supported accommodation.
