RESIDENTS had to be evacuated from their homes as smoke billowed across Rotherham yesterday afternoon when a blaze broke out at a former fire station.
Five crews were called to tackle the flames at the disused Brampton Bierlow Station in Knollbeck Lane.
Some people living in the street were evacuated, while other residents were advised to keep their windows and doors shut as plumes of black smoke wafted out from the top floor of the building.
The alarm was raised at around 2.45pm, with 30 fire officers from across the region called to the scene. An aerial ladder platform was also used to help tackle the flames.
The disused building, which stopped being used as a functioning fire station in June last year, was sold by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to a private local developer in May.
The cause of the blaze, which kept crews tied up for several hours, is still being investigated.
