FIREFIGHTERS called out to deal with a blazing garage in Sheffield stopped off to put out a house fire they spotted en route.

Two crews from Mansfield Road and Lowedges were scrambled after calls a garage was on fire on Atlantic Road, Lowedges at 2.10am yesterday .

Yards from their intended destination further down the road, they spotted that the front door of an end terraced house in the same street was on fire.

“We could see the door was well alight. One of the crews stopped to deal with it while the other drove on to the garage,” said a spokesman. He added he believed the garage, which contained a valuable MG car, belonged to the same family as the house.

“At this stage we believe both fires were started deliberately. Fortunately no-one was injured.”

Police are investigating.
