DID you spot The Star’s April Fool?

To mark the first day of the fourth month, page four of yesterday’s paper pulled a prank on readers with a hound-related hoax.

A story headlined Hounds Get Specs Appeal claimed dogs at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium in Hillsborough were to wear specially-made sunglasses to protect their eyes while racing.

It claimed the shades had been developed after some greyhounds were seen squinting while making their way around the track.

But the story was a fake, concocted by Owlerton and the Crystal Peaks branch of opticians Specsavers, in honour of an age-old tradition.

And it soon proved there was no fooling The Star’s Facebook followers, who sniffed a rat as soon as a link to the story was posted on the social networking site.

‘And today’s date would be?’ asked Andrew Kinsella, while Sandra Davies laughed, ‘Nice try’.
