Hotline for fraud victims
FRAUD victims in South Yorkshire are being urged to use a new hotline to report offences.
The National Fraud Authority has set up a new reporting centre called Action Fraud aimed at making it easier for people to report offences and to get advice.
The hope is that by providing a single point of contact for victims it will help police officers investigating cross-border offences.
Dr Bernard Herdan, chief executive of the National Fraud Authority, said: "Victims of fraud often don't want to talk about it because they feel embarrassed. They suffer a financial loss and a loss of self esteem because they blame themselves for being taken in. But the best way to fight fraud is to get people talking about it and reporting it to Action Fraud."
Graham Wragg, manager of South Yorkshire Police's economic crime unit, said: "Action Fraud will support victims, help prevent fraud and better enable us to investigate crime by giving us access to national intelligence."
"Fraudsters can target people in South Yorkshire regardless of where they are based, so by providing a national reporting centre we will be in a much stronger position to tackle fraud locally."
Call Action Fraud on 0300 1232040.
