Paul Scriven (Mar 31) claims the Lib Dems plan to make Sheffield 100% self sufficient in renewable energy within 10 years. The national renewable energy target is just 15% so this shows how challenging this is.
We certainly need to close the looming energy gap. Unfortunately there is no substance behind the Lib Dem ‘plan’. It doesn’t even set out our current or predicted energy needs or say how much the schemes will generate or how they’ll be funded.
Some people have been taking advantage of the Feed in Tariff scheme using solar panels, but the council has not invested in this scheme.
Within weeks of them taking office in 2008, the Lib Dems quashed plans for wind farms and failed to hit regional renewable energy targets by 2010.
Energy saving and renewable energy are vitally important but the Lib Dem claims are little more than hot air and spin.
